International Social Pedagogy Conference in Cyprus 2020

We are very pleased to share details of the forthcoming international conference Social Education and Social Pedagogy: Here and Now in Cyprus. The 3-day conference is hosted by the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan), the Social Pedagogy Association (SPA), us at ThemPra, and Arizona State University (ASU) at UCLan’s beautiful campus in Cyprus, Pýla, Larnaka from 16 to 18 June. We hope to see many of you there.

Cyprus is the third largest island in the Eastern Mediterranean, surrounded by beautiful beaches, ocean vistas, palm trees, and blue skies. Temperatures in June average around 30°C  during the day and around 20°C at night. We are quite excited for our subtropical summer conference!

We hope to make this conference a uniquely interactive experience for our participants. We will offer speakers, interactive workshops, Open Space forum, and a more general poster presentation area for those not wanting to give a full presentation. This conference is part of an international initiative to bring together scholars and practitioners of social pedagogy and social education from around the world.  It builds on many previous efforts, most recently the Puebla 2018 conference “Social Education and Social Pedagogy: Bridging Traditions and Innovations”, which represented a wide variety of topics reflecting many of the diverse areas encompassed by social pedagogical research and practice.

In Cyprus, we will focus on similar connections between social education and social pedagogy while highlighting the many aspirations pedagogues hold for a better world. It is our intention to connect and respond to social change while exploring solutions for challenges in sustainability, inequality, global violence, participatory democracy and more.

We have included some information below to help you plan:

Proposal Submissions

Submissions may include paper presentations or workshop proposals. Workshops must offer attendees active participation through acquisition of a new skill or through responsible engagement of participants in discussion and problem-solving.

Due to popular request, we will have a second deadline for proposal submissions. First submissions were due 31 September, 2019, and are currently under review. The acceptance of those submissions will be sent in early November. The second proposal submission will be accepted between 1 November 2019 and30 January, 2020. Notification of acceptance for these submissions will be sent mid-March of 2020.

All proposals, for workshop, presentation, or posters, should be submitted via this Google form.

In addition to Cyprus 2020, papers on issues around migration will have the opportunity to submit to the forthcoming special issue of the International Journal of Social Pedagogy (see here).

Accommodations

Accommodations in Cyprus are varied. We are reserving 120 rooms on campus, with first preference given to organizers and volunteers. There will be a room registration form and contact information shared during your registration process, but it is very important to note that the rooms are NOT included in registration and you MUST reserve your room separately. Rooms on campus are charged at €35 per night for a single and €55 per night for a double. These rooms will go fast, so if you are interested, be sure to reserve your room as soon as possible.

Volunteer Opportunity

We are requesting additional volunteers to help with conference needs such as sign-in, registration, room assignment assistance, and so on. Volunteers will be guaranteed a held room on campus. Volunteer expectations will include one four-hour time slot of any of the three conference days. Volunteer times will be 8:30 – 12:30, 12:00 – 16:00, or 15:30 – 19:00. If you are interested in volunteering for the conference, please apply via this Google form.

Expected Costs

Conference: The early-bird conference rate is £125. This rate will be available until the end of 2019. Please take note that the conference fee will be charged in Great British Pound (£) as this goes to UCLan, while you will pay for your accommodation and remaining costs in Euro (€), the local currency in Cyprus.

Flights: We are unfortunately unable to offer general flight cost expectations to Cyprus, due to the number of countries involved in our conference.

Food: Included in your registration fee is breakfast, morning coffee, lunch, afternoon coffee and biscuits. It is possible to offer dinner, as well, by advance reservation, at the cost of €11 per meal. These costs are inclusive of VAT (taxes). To eat “in town” costs an average of €45 for two people at a mid-range restaurant.
