International Social Pedagogy conference 2020 – change of venue

Preston is the new Larnaka

Due to recent political events in Turkey, Syria, and escalating tensions in the surrounding regions, we will be moving the Social Pedagogy Association conference from the UCLan Cyprus campus to the UCLan Preston campus in Preston, Lancashire, UK. We are now Preston 2020!

Due to this change, registration for the conference has been slightly delayed, but we are working diligently and will be opening registration as soon as possible. It is absolutely important that you continue to check your email, our website, or the SPA Facebook page for registration opening. The conference dates of 16 to 18 June remain the same.

While we will miss our beach destination, Preston is a beautiful river-side city which shows evidence of ancient Roman activity and offers lovely architecture and fascinating historical value to your travels. As a university city, Preston offers wonderful dining and pub options, with affordable pricing. Weather tends to be relatively mild and we expect temperatures between 18° to 22°C (64° to 72°F) for June.

We have included some updated information below to help you plan in accordance with this change of location:

Proposal Submissions

Submissions may include paper presentations or workshop proposals. Workshops must offer attendees active participation through acquisition of a new skill or through responsible engagement of participants in discussion and problem-solving.

We have a second deadline for proposal submissions. First submissions were due 30 September, 2019, and are currently under review. The acceptance of those submissions will be sent out very soon. Please watch your emails.

The second proposal submission is currently being accepted until 30 January, 2020. Notification of acceptance for these submissions will be sent mid-March of 2020.

All proposals, for workshop, presentation, or posters, should be submitted via this Google form.

In addition to Preston 2020, papers on issues around migration will have the opportunity to submit to the forthcoming special issue of the International Journal of Social Pedagogy (see here).

Accommodations

Accommodations in Preston are varied. Unlike Cyprus, Preston does not currently have on-campus rooms available. Conference delegates will be responsible for self-booking accommodation. Preston is along the West Coast railway line and has excellent public transit and walking paths, and there are many local hotels, Airbnb’s, and home-stays in the area. We are searching for hotels to offer a conference rate; however we do not currently have any further information on that but we will share as more information becomes available.

Conference rates

Rates will remain the same. The early-bird conference rate is £125. This rate will be available until the end of 2019. Please take note that the conference fee will be charged in Great British Pound (£).

Travel

The nearest large airports to Preston are Manchester International Airport and Liverpool John Lennon Airport, both of which have easy public transport options. It is also possible to reach Preston from London by train, departing from London Euston.

If you have any further questions you can reach us by replying to this message, or by emailing contact@socialpedagogy.org. We look forward to seeing you in Preston this coming summer!
